Brian Bender's portfolio includes a mixture of Board positions. He was Chair of the London Metal Exchange from 2010-2019, Non-executive Director of the Financial Reporting Council (until March 2020) and of Pool Reinsurance, as well as Chair of Water UK.
He is also is a Trustee of Lloyds Register Foundation, as well as having several advisory roles (eg with the Chinese energy company CGN and with Fingleton Associates).
Brian retired from the civil service in 2009, having been a Permanent Secretary for nearly 10 years. His final post was at the Department for Business (and before that DTI), where his main focus was on establishing the Department as the ‘voice for business’ across Government.
Previously, he was Permanent Secretary at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, leading the creation of the Department in 2001. He has overseen policy development in areas such as energy, climate change, science and innovation, as well as leading work on risk management across Government. He has extensive EU experience, having twice served in the UK Permanent Representation to the EU and, from 1994-98, he was Head of the European Secretariat in the Cabinet Office.
