China’s Changing Business Model of Banking

The recent turmoil of the global financial system highlights a need for banking business models to be reconsidered around the world. For emerging economies, the Western model style of banking and finance has clearly failed.
 
Over nearly 30 years, China has gradually moved to a universal banking system. Academic research about the gradual changes of this model, however, is still rare (especially in an international context). This paper, from the China Europe International Business School, aims to shed some light in this regard drawing from a comparative study based on data from banks in China, Europe, the UK and the USA.
