BLOG | How can you secure your first Chair role?

While it may seem like a natural progression from being a Non-executive Director, becoming a Chair demands a conscious shift in mindset, leadership and listening.

As Chair, you’re not just contributing to governance, but creating the conditions that make it possible. That means setting the tone, managing Boardroom dynamics and keeping discussions focused on what truly matters.

In a recent Criticaleye Chair Ready Programme session, participants explored what’s needed to secure your first Chair role, as well as the skills and capabilities needed to succeed once you’ve got it.

Getting that first role

  • It’s all in the prep: After job interviews, write down the questions you’ve struggled to answer, and look out for patterns. Eventually, with practice, you’ll provide stronger answers
  • Rejection hurts: You’re not going to get the first job you apply for. Finding the right role can take a lot of time, energy and resilience. The competition is fierce but remember to keep pushing!
  • Take the role that's right for you:  Once you get an offer, take a moment to reflect on the role. Do you see yourself working well with the Board and senior leadership team? Do the business’ values align with yours? Is it the right sector? Saying no can be just as important as yes
  • Capitalising on external reference points: Always take the opportunity to meet people and network, because you’ll build connections who can advise on the sector, the company and possibly even the role that you’re going for
  • Don’t stop learning: Stay up to date with governance trends, Boardroom dynamics and sector developments. Continuous learning not only sharpens your insight but demonstrates your commitment to being successful in the role
  • Stay active on LinkedIn: It’s your digital CV and a space to build your personal brand. Share insights, engage with peers and showcase the time you’ve invested in developing yourself to become a Chair. It’s also a great way for recruiters and Boards to find you

Securing your first Chair role isn’t about luck, but about how ready you are. By understanding what the role truly demands and continuously refining your leadership approach, you’ll be better positioned to step confidently into the Chair role.

Criticaleye’s Chair Ready Programme is designed to help aspiring Chairs bridge the gap between NED and Chair, giving you the tools, network and confidence to succeed in the role.
