Tipping Point

The FDI market in Europe has been very challenging, and the UK has experienced a reduction in FDI volumes and a decline in investor sentiment, shows this year's annual EY Attractiveness Survey.

Key points include:

  • The number of projects the UK attracted in 2018 fell by 13 percent from the previous year, against a backdrop of a four percent decline in FDI projects in Europe as a whole.
  • The UK’s share of all European projects slipped to 17 percent - its lowest level in two decades.
  • The recent success in attracting manufacturing FDI in the UK came to an abrupt end with a 35 percent fall in the number of new factory projects in 2018.
  • 15 percent of inward investors in the UK have put their investment plans on hold since the EU referendum.
