BLOG | Leadership in Singapore's Evolving Economy

At our recent Leadership in the Boardroom dinner in Singapore, discussions among senior executives focused on the critical role Boards are playing in navigating uncertainty, developing resilience and sustaining long-term performance in an increasingly complex global landscape.

Guests at our dinner agreed that Independent Directors (iNEDs) play a critical role in shaping the conditions for long-term value creation. Central to this is a strong relationship between Board and senior management team, built on trust, transparency and open communication.

Asking difficult questions of executives, openly debating different perspectives and fostering constructive disagreement are all essential to faster, better decision making for the business.

So what should Chairs and non-executives be focusing on and how should they be supporting executives? Some key themes emerged:

  • Resilience remains a priority, with organisations reducing exposure to shocks through forward thinking on things like energy security and diversified partnerships. For Non-executive-Directors (NEDs), this means understanding where risk sits and aligning strategy, incentives and risk appetite without overreach.
  • As competition intensifies, Boards and NEDs must also drive evolution by encouraging innovation, investing in talent and fostering constructive challenge.
  • CEO selection is one of the most important decisions for a Board, underpinned by robust succession planning and ongoing assessment of leadership capability to ensure future readiness.

Of course, the Board also has to play its part in building credibility with management teams. Clear priorities and demonstrable experience will ensure discussions focus on key issues that help create value and keep everyone focused on the strategic direction. Board members must not become too insular. They need to be well connected and regularly benchmark outside their Boards to stay current and retain effective oversight.

These themes are explored in a Criticaleye Podcast featuring Kalpesh R Parmar, General Manager, Mars Snacking Asia. He highlights how leaders can drive change and establish high-performing teams across diverse Asian markets, balancing operational discipline with innovation while positioning Asia as a leading force in technology and consumer-led growth. Ultimately, effective leadership and strong Board dynamics are critical to navigating uncertainty and sustaining performance. As complexity increases, Boards must balance oversight with supporting innovation, resilience and long-term value creation. This ensures organisations remain adaptive and well-positioned for enduring success.

At Criticaleye, we support leaders across Asia’s diverse and fast-evolving markets with the insight, challenge and Peer-to-Peer networks needed to strengthen decision-making, build trust and navigate complexity. Similarly, our Chair-Ready Programme supports executives and non-executives who are thinking of stepping up to the Board, need to seek out advice and experiences on what companies are looking for.
